Let's first understand the composition of engine oil. Whether it is mineral oil or fully synthetic oil, the main components of engine oil are base oil and additives. The difference is that the composition of base oil and additives is different, and the focus on performance is also slightly different. In addition, the additives used by different brands are not the same. Therefore, it is recommended not to mix different engine oils!
It is common for car owners to mix old and new engine oil of the same type when they see that there is less engine oil, but they do not want to replace it all, so they add some of the same type of engine oil. The impact of this situation is that it will reduce the protective effect of the new engine oil. The reason is that after using the engine oil for a period of time, the antioxidants, additives, etc. inside will gradually become ineffective. Metal debris, moisture, impurities in the air, etc. generated during the engine's operation will enter the engine oil, causing the protective lubrication effect of the oil to deteriorate. If the old oil is not cleaned up during replacement and mixed directly with new oil, it will accelerate the oxidation rate of the new oil, reduce the performance and service life of the new oil.
The main issue with mixing different grades of engine oil from the same brand is the difference in engine oil viscosity. The engine has certain requirements for the viscosity of the oil, and different vehicle models need to choose the corresponding viscosity of the oil. Oil with viscosity of 40, 30, or 20. If different viscosity engine oils are mixed, such as 5W30 and 5W40 engine oils, their performance will be lower than 5W40. This may lead to insufficient engine protection, increased wear, and seriously affect the service life of the engine.
Many car owners exhibit significant arbitrariness in the selection and application of lubricants. Even if the types and viscosity levels of lubricants from different brands are the same, the composition of their base oil or additives may vary to some extent. If they are mixed together, their performance will change, which not only affects the service life of the equipment, but even in the case of improper lubrication, cotton wool and particles may form, leading to oil passage blockage and increased wear.
Of course, if encountering an emergency situation of engine oil burning in the wilderness, different grades of engine oil or vegetable oil can be temporarily mixed.
