Burning engine oil is one of the most concerning issues for car owners. So, after ruling out the situation of burning engine oil caused by problems such as valve oil seals, what is the connection between lubricating oil and burning engine oil? Today we will talk about the three major lubricating oil indicators related to burning engine oil.
High temperature high shear (HTHS)
High temperature and high shear (HTHS) is an indicator of viscosity stability of engine oil under high temperature and high shear conditions, reflecting the lubrication and retention ability of engine oil under high temperature and high shear conditions. This parameter is the apparent viscosity, also known as dynamic viscosity, of the oil obtained through capillary viscosity testing at 150 ℃. It is tested to simulate the working temperature and high-speed shear conditions of internal combustion engine cylinders.
Open flash point
The flash point represents the combustion point of engine oil vapor, which means that engine oil turns into engine oil vapor but is essentially engine oil. After cooling, it slowly condenses into engine oil, but when the temperature reaches the flash point, this engine oil vapor will burn and be consumed. If the flash point of engine oil is too low, it is particularly easy to evaporate into engine oil vapor. On the contrary, if the flash point of engine oil is high, it is not easy to produce engine oil vapor, which will greatly reduce consumption. The cylinder walls require oil lubrication, and oil vapor can easily enter the combustion chamber and be ignited, resulting in the phenomenon of "burning oil".
Evaporation loss
The evaporation loss of lubricating oil refers to the amount of lubricating oil lost through evaporation under certain conditions, generally expressed in terms of mass ratio. The amount of evaporation loss is directly proportional to the volatility of lubricating oil.
The greater the evaporation loss, the greater the fuel consumption in practical applications. Therefore, when selecting lubricating oil products, it is necessary to limit the evaporation loss under certain conditions.
Wells' test results far exceed the standard
HTHS
HTHS reflects the adhesion ability of lubricating oil between the piston and cylinder, as well as between the shaft and the bearing shell, and is related to the oiliness or polarity agent added to the lubricating oil. Many people call it oil film strength. The reference value of standard quality indicators is not less than 2.3, and the measured result of Wells products is 2.652.
Open flash point
The open flash point is an important temperature value of lubricating oil, which indicates the temperature environment in which the product reaches the evaporation point, that is, how high the temperature will affect the product during use and cause evaporation. The standard quality index reference value is not less than 200 ℃, while the actual test result of Wells products is 230 ℃, which is 30 ℃ higher than the standard value, proving that Wells products have stronger resistance to high-temperature evaporation.
Evaporation loss
Evaporation loss is another important indicator of lubricating oil, expressed in percentage form. The reference value of the standard quality indicator is not greater than 15, while the actual test result of Wells products is 8.12, which is much better than the standard quality indicator. Evaporation loss is only half of the standard indicator.
In summary, to avoid oil burning caused by lubricating oil as much as possible, it is necessary to consider not only the HTHS of the lubricating oil, but also the flash point and evaporation loss. In this regard, the testing results of Wells lubricating oil are far higher than the quality indicators, which means that using Wells products, the situation of burning engine oil is very small.
Choose Wells for oil change
