Cars have become a popular means of transportation, and people's daily travel cannot do without them. Many people have purchased their own cars, but they are not clear about the daily maintenance and upkeep methods of the car, and even do not understand the functions of the internal parts of the car. For example, many people do not know the function and function of the common car spark plug, and if there is a problem, they have no way to start. Below, the editor has compiled several taboos during the use of spark plugs for your reference.
The function of spark plugs
The spark plug itself is a very important component of a car. It is located inside the engine and generates sparks through electrodes, igniting the mixture inside the engine and providing power to the engine. So, the function of a spark plug is equivalent to a lighter, and its ignition performance will also affect the overall performance of the engine.
Taboos for use
1. Avoid long-term unclean carbon deposits.
During the use of spark plugs, the insulation of their electrodes and skirts will normally accumulate carbon. If these carbon deposits are not cleaned for a long time, they will accumulate more and more, ultimately leading to electrode leakage and even inability to ignite. So carbon deposits should be regularly removed and not cleaned until the spark plug is not working.
2. Avoid long-term use.
There are various types of spark plugs, but they all have their own lifespan. If they are still used beyond their lifespan, it will be detrimental to the performance and economy of the engine. Research has shown that as the service life of spark plugs extends, the central electrode will change towards a circular arc shape, while the side electrode will change towards a concave arc shape. This shape will increase the electrode gap and cause discharge difficulties, affecting the normal operation of the engine.
3. Avoid removing scale arbitrarily.
When cleaning the outer surface of spark plugs, it is not advisable to use sandpaper, metal sheets, etc. for easy and quick descaling. Instead, the spark plug should be immersed in gasoline and cleaned with a brush to ensure that the ceramic body on the surface of the spark plug is not damaged.
4. Avoid burning.
Some people often use the method of burning to remove carbon and oil stains from the spark plug electrodes and skirts. This seemingly effective method is actually very harmful. Because the temperature is difficult to control during a fire. It is easy to burn and crack the insulation of the skirt, causing spark plug leakage, and the small cracks generated after the fire are often difficult to detect, which brings great trouble to troubleshooting. The correct method for handling carbon and oil stains on spark plugs is to clean them with specialized equipment; The second is solution cleaning. Soak the spark plug in alcohol or gasoline for a certain period of time. When the carbon deposits soften, use a brush to clean and air dry.
5. Avoid mixing hot and cold.
Spark plugs, in addition to their different shapes and sizes, are also divided into three types: cold, medium, and hot. Generally, engines with high compression ratios and high rotational speeds should use cold type spark plugs; For engines with low compression ratios and low engine speeds, it is advisable to use hot type spark plugs, and there are also medium-sized spark plugs in between. In addition, the selection of spark plugs for new or overhauled engines may vary depending on the actual situation compared to old engines. For example, when the engine is relatively new, the selection of spark plugs should tend towards a hot type; Old engines that have been in use for a long time are prone to excessive carbon deposits and oil stains due to performance degradation. The selection of spark plugs should tend towards medium or cold types to improve their ability to resist oil stains.
6. Avoid misdiagnosis and misjudgment.
When replacing a new spark plug or suspecting its malfunction for inspection, the locomotive should be stopped and turned off after running normally for a period of time. Remove the spark plug and observe its electrode color characteristics. There can be several situations: first, the central electrode is reddish brown, and the side electrode and its surroundings are turquoise gray, indicating that the spark plug is suitable for selection; The second is that there is erosion or melting between the electrodes, and the skirt and insulator are in a burnt white state, indicating that the spark plug selection is too hot; Thirdly, there are black stripes between the electrodes and the insulation skirt, indicating that the spark plug has leaked air. Improper selection of spark plugs or air leakage should result in selecting a suitable spark plug again.
